Shakara: A Contemporary Celebration of West African Cuisine

With a laidback opening just before Christmas, Shakara is Baker Street’s newest foodie destination. A contemporary West African restaurant and cocktail bar, Shakara introduces a fresh take on traditional African dishes, spotlighting the rich culinary heritage of Nigeria, Ghana, and The Gambia.

Founder Jolly Cole envisions Shakara as a platform to introduce the world to African cuisine with an international twist. By merging impeccable standards with Afrocentric authenticity, the restaurant aims to create an experience that delights all the senses. With a star-studded team led by Victor Okunowo, a MasterChef: The Professionals semifinalist, and Ayo Adeyemi, a renowned consultant chef from the acclaimed Akoko, the duo has crafted a menu that honors West African flavors while elevating them with modern, innovative techniques.

Shakara’s offerings take classic West African flavours and elevate them with sophisticated techniques and presentations. Highlights include peppered goat with smoked marrow croquettes and dry-aged Hereford beef with yaji, piperade and peppercorn uda jus.

The design, spearheaded by Red Deer captures the essence of West Africa with modern sophistication. Rich terracotta tiles echo Nigeria’s vibrant red soil, while abstract artwork sourced from Red Door Gallery adds a contemporary African aesthetic. Built across two floors, the venue houses a cocktail bar and two private dining rooms, making it a destination for both intimate gatherings and lively celebrations.

Shakara doesn’t just offer food—it offers an immersive cultural experience. Live music and DJ sets of Afrohouse, Afrobeats, and R&B fill the air, complementing the flavors and bringing Afro-culture to life. This harmony of cuisine, ambiance, and music sets the stage for an evening where all five senses are engaged.

Whether you’re drawn by its exquisite cuisine, dynamic atmosphere, or design that whispers stories of West Africa, Shakara is undoubtedly a restaurant to watch.
