In February 2026, an exhibition in Freetown will revisit the work and influence of Louise “Gaga”
Metzger (1934–2019), one of the most important figures in the history of modern art in Sierra
Leone. Titled Through the Eyes of Gaga: Louise Metzger and the Shaping of Modern Artistic
Practice in Sierra Leone, the exhibition runs from 13–21 February and is presented by unx-art.
The exhibition focuses on Gaga not only as an artist, but as a cultural pioneer who created the
foundations for an artistic community in Freetown. After studying art in London, she returned to
Sierra Leone at a time when there were no formal galleries and very few opportunities for artists
to exhibit or learn. In response, she opened Gaga Studio, later known as Gaga Gallery, the first
gallery in Freetown. Conceived as an open art space, it was a place where any artist could
exhibit work, develop skills, and grow through exchange and mentorship.
Over time, Gaga Studio became a vital meeting point for artists, students, and cultural workers.
It nurtured experimentation and collaboration, and helped establish a shared artistic language that continues to shape Sierra Leone’s creative scene today. Many of the country’s most influential artists trace their early development back to this space, directly or indirectly. Although her practice was deeply rooted in Sierra Leone, Gaga’s work reached international audiences. She exhibited in the United Kingdom, the United States, and South Africa, and in 1990 held a solo exhibition at The Africa Centre in London; a landmark moment for a Sierra Leonean artist at a time when such opportunities were rare.
The exhibition is organized by unx-art, a Freetown-based gallery committed to documenting and expanding Sierra Leone’s contemporary art history. The gallery has hosted three local exhibitions and launched a Sierra Leonean art book in November 2025, contributing to much-needed archival work. Internationally, unx-art has exhibited during Art Basel Week 2025, connecting local artistic practice to global conversations while keeping its focus firmly on Sierra Leone.
Through the Eyes of Gaga is not only a tribute to one artist, but a reflection on the importance of legacy. Louise Metzger’s greatest contribution lies in the structures she created, spaces of access, confidence, and continuity. For younger generations, her story affirms that Sierra Leone’s art scene was built intentionally, through care and community, and that its future depends on remembering and building upon this foundation. By revisiting Gaga’s life and work, the exhibition ensures that her influence remains a living force, shaping artists yet to come.
